Background

In my dorm room there is a radiator which makes a clicking sound. It is mostly heard at quiet hours and can sometimes keep me awake during night. When my landlord refused to acknowledge the problem I decided to study the radiator in order to compile and hand in a detailed report of its clicking patterns.

Measurements

A piezo transducer was attached to the radiator and connected to the input of a computer sound card. After some initial recording experiments, a program was built to monitor the incoming signal and log clicks in real time. 18 days of data was collected. Finally, graphs were plotted using a custom-built program.

Letter to the landlord

18 pages of graphs (one for each day) and a CD with audio samples of the radiator sounds were handed in to the landlord together with a formal letter of complaint. No answer was received.

Installation

Graphs, audio samples and the letter of complaint were displayed at Gallery Win-Win during the exhibition Lava, March 26-27, 2005.
